MEET YOUR INSTRUCTORS
Experience that goes beyond the classroom.
Our journey began at Arthur Murray Dance Studios, where we spent three years developing as professional ballroom instructors, refining our skills, and helping students discover what they could accomplish through dance.
We’ve carried our passion onto the competition floor, earning a finalist placement in competitive Smooth dancing and helping one of our students achieve first-place results in Smooth and Rhythm at the Pacific Grand Ball.
From a student’s very first steps to preparing for competition, these experiences have taught us how much thoughtful instruction, purposeful practice, and an encouraging teacher can make a difference.
WHY WE FOUNDED THE BASICS
Professional standards. A more personal way to learn.
We loved what we discovered through teaching: ballroom is so much more than a collection of patterns. It’s movement, music, discipline, and two people learning how to work together.
We also came to believe that excellent instruction should feel approachable. A student shouldn’t have to chase an exclusive experience to receive careful teaching, honest guidance, and an opportunity to improve.
We created The Basics Ballroom to bring those values together: real professional standards, an encouraging atmosphere, and a sustainable place for our neighbors to keep dancing. We’re proud to share that vision with Gladstone, Oregon City, Milwaukie, and the wider Clackamas community.

WHAT WE BELIEVE ABOUT DANCE
Four feet. Two minds. One dance.
To us, ballroom dancing is where art, athletic discipline, and human connection meet. It begins with something as ordinary as walking, then becomes extraordinary when movement finds the music and another person joins in.
A Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, Rumba, or Cha-Cha has its own rhythm and personality, but the dances share essential skills: balance, timing, coordination, and awareness. The fundamentals give us a language of movement. The music gives each dance its character.
Then comes the partnership. Leading and following are more than sets of rules. They’re ways of communicating, listening, and responding. Each dancer needs confidence in their own movement and awareness of the person in front of them. In that sense, ballroom really is a team sport.
And like any athletic skill, dancing rewards patience and repetition. The elegance we admire isn’t accidental. It grows from small things practiced carefully, until we can move with greater ease and enjoy the moment instead of thinking through every step.
Grace isn’t an accident. It’s built.
HOW WE TEACH
Learning well is an art of its own.
Good dancing starts with good teaching. Our job is to make the complicated understandable without pretending that worthwhile skills happen overnight.
We teach through a process we call layering. Rather than handing students a long pattern to memorize, we introduce movement one useful piece at a time. We explain it, practice it, and build on it when the foundation is ready.
Understanding gives you a reason for the movement. Repetition develops the coordination to trust it. Dancing with different partners and music gives you the chance to use what you’ve learned, not just recite it.
We take that work seriously, but we don’t expect lessons to feel overly serious. There’s room for laughter, challenges, and little breakthroughs. We ask our students to bring curiosity and a willingness to practice. In return, we bring clear instruction, patience, and a genuine investment in their progress.
Know why it works.
Clear explanation helps an unfamiliar movement make sense.
Make it your own.
Purposeful repetition builds coordination, balance, and confidence.
Dance beyond the drill.
Use familiar skills across different partners, music, and dances.
THE BASICS IN PRACTICE
See how simple skills come together.
The Waltz Box is one example of how familiar steps, timing, and balance can become a dance. Our short reference videos help students revisit what they learn in class and keep practicing between visits.
